We have a male betta our daughter for Christmas and it was not long before the tank felt (2.5 gallons) are - strong enough that the room smelled like a tank. Fish is very good - good food (pellets) and is active. We are surprised only by the stench - the type of Petstore said change in water once a month, but it seems that you need once a week.
